The piece is pretty old. We are not sure if this is made with Lost Wax Cast method but in all probability seems so.

The Prabha, Main figure and Square Base are all detachable.

This is the Mahisha Mardini form of Goddess Durga.

The Goddess or Devi is the personification of primeval energy. She is known by many names in Hindu parlance such as Adi Shakti, Prakriti, Maha Maayaa, Avidya and so on, each indicating her relation with the Supreme or the being.

Here she is shown slaying Mahishasura - the buffalo demon.

She stands on the demon ready to slay him with her trident. She is shown sporting various weapons as (clockwise from lower right), Shar (a bunch of arrows), Khadga (knife), Chakra (discus), Shankha (conch), Kavacha (shield), Dhanush (bow). With her left front hand she holds Mahisha by his hair and the right front hand would have held a Trishula (trident) pointed at Mahisha but it is missing in this statue.

Vaasuki – the king of snakes shades her with his hoods and is shown a part of ornate Prabha (intricately carved backgrounds seen in South Indian statues) behind Devi.

The statue has a round base, which rests on a double square base.
