Description

This is an old print of one of the paintings by Raja Ravi Varma.

He was a renowned Indian painter and artist from the state of Travancore (currently in southern Kerala and constituting some parts of Tamil Nadu). He was known for creating paintings in a style that was a fusion of Indian tradition and European art techniques. His works were invariably based on themes from Indian literature and mythology.

This work depicts an episode in the Ramayana, when Rama propitiates the Ocean for letting him and his army cross over to Lanka.

He fasts for three days on the shore immersed in deep meditation. When the Ocean does not respond Rama is roused to anger. He decides to dry up all his waters with his fire weapon and picks up his bow. The ocean immediately appears with his wives and paraphernalia to pacify Rama's anger.

Notice Rama's strong body gone lean with fasting and sheer anger in his eyes. Varuna's expressions and gestures beautifully convey his desperation to appease Rama.
