Description

Batik literally means ‘wax writing'. Batik technique is indigenous to India as to Indonesia or Malaysia or Japan. But Indians have known the technique of Batik art for about 2000 years . Batik makes use of rice starch and wax resists for printing. This technique became unpopular over time because of tedious procedures of waxing and then de-waxing. It was however kept alive as a hobby by aristocratic ladies and then later revived in the 20th century.

This Batik is a painting of Shiva in his Ardhanaareshwara form. Here Devi occupies half of Shiva's body.
