Description

An old styled Picchwai painting of devotees celebrating at Shrinathji’s temple. A unique Pichwai in simplistic, water colour painting like style. This piece of Pichwai art is created in line drawing mode and coloured subtly in natural stone colours. This artwork depicts an old scene at Srinathji (Krishna) temple. A crowd of devotees are gathered around Srinathji who is celebrated by traditional temple priests. The devotees are seen singing and playing musical instruments in praise of Krishna.

Such congregational devotional singing in accompaniment of music is known as Kirtana or Sankirtana. Kirtana is closely associated with Vaishnavas (devotees of Lord Vishnu, Rama or Krishna) and forms an important part of ritualistic adornment of Lord Vishnu. Devotion to Vishnu involves deep emotional attachment to the deity on the part of devotees and Kirtanas are performed in the same spirit. Devotion to Vishnu through Kirtana formed the core of the Bhakti movement of 7th century in India.

The Pichwai painting is rendered on a cotton cloth and framed in an ornate hand-painted border. All colours are natural colors obtained by grinding natural stone of different hues. Real and pure gold paint or gold foils are used in traditional Pichwais as and when needed in subjects. For example in jewellery, dresses, borders, outlines etc.

The word Srinath is a combination of two words ‘Sri’ and ‘Nath’. Sri means Lakshmi (consort of Lord Vishnu or Krishna) and Nath means Master. So ‘Srinath’ is a name of Krishna which means Master or Husband of Lakshmi. The suffix ‘Ji’ is commonly used at the end of names in North India, Rajasthan in particular, to ascribe respect to the person being referred to.

Pichwai paintings only have Srinathji for their theme and the scenes painted are mostly from Srinathji’s loving sports in Vrindavan with Gopis and cowherds. Pichwai art emerged when the cloth-sheet serving as a background behind the statue of Srinathji was beautified with Rajasthani style paintings created by devotee-artists. In-fact the word Pichwai is a derivative of the Hindi word ‘Peeche’ which means Behind.

The painters, in their dedication to Srinathji went on creating new background cloth-sheets painted with various themes for different occasions. The discarded sheets were preserved and thus started a whole genre of Rajasthani art called Pichwai and alongside emerged a team of devoted artists who would dedicate their art in service of Srinathji and keep painting for generations that continues till date. Many of these artists are still ardent devotees themselves and lead a very simple life.

Srinathji’s temple is located in Nathdwara, a small town in Rajasthan. The elaborate set of customs and procedures of offering loving service to Srinathji were founded by Vallabhcharya, an ardent devotee of Srinathji, great Sanskrit scholar and a philosopher. He founded the ‘Pushti Marg’ of devotional service to Lord Krishna wherein the Supreme Being is conceived of not as all-powerful, hard to access Brahman of the Vedas but a small, loving child in want of his devotee’s loving service.

Srinathji is therefore pampered with choicest of delicacies, rich garments by doting devotees throughout the day with elaborate rituals and procedures. All our Pichwai paintings for sale are rendered on cotton cloth and hand-painted by traditional Pichwai artists.

I have a great love of the unique devotional art from India: over many trips there, as well as from purchases from reputable online sites, I now enjoy a small collection of paintings & sculpture in my home. Since I had first seen them, though, lost-wax sculptures of gods & goddesses - with their graceful limbs holding symbolic articles, with a fresh vitality & lovely facial expressions - had particularly captured my heart. For many years I had searched, in India & online, for one image in particular: that of Sri Rama. Even in India this is not easy to find. One day I did an online search, not expecting much result. Yet at a site in India called Cottage9, I saw a beautiful brass lost-wax of Sri Rama with all the elements I wished for: a graceful yet strong demeanor, holding a separate bow in his hand; with a noble & kind expression. Alas, it had already been sold; lost-wax images are by definition one-of-a-kind. When I inquired, I was told that I could commission another murti of Sri Ram; while of course no lost-wax sculpture can be duplicated, I was assured it would be of the same high quality. This was taking a risk; there was no way to know what the finished sculpture would look like. The person with whom I was interacting, Mr. Gupta, sent me an article describing not only each step, with photos, of creating a lost-wax bronze sculpture (Mr. Gupta patiently answered all my questions about materials, concluding that bronze was generally considered the best metal in lost-wax sculpting), yet also describing the prayer and meditation that each artist undertakes before creating an image of the Divine. Mr. Gupta thoroughly answered several other questions; I even sent some photos of the Murtis which would also be on the altar. After these conversations I felt ready to commission the sculpture. Most imprortantly, I felt Mr. Gupta understood how meaningful this was for me, saying that he would personally watch over the production of the murti. All of the arrangements with Cottage9 were clearly explained and smoothly completed. And, while an investment - comparative to other sites at which I have purchased this intricately produced art, I felt the price was quite reasonable. The creation of the sculpture took between 2-3 months; when the murti arrived, it was packed extremely well in a sealed wooden crate; its journey from India to the U.S. was completed without mishap. And the Sri Rama murti was indeed very beautiful & everything I could have hoped for. I would unhesitatingly recommend Cottage9 if one is looking for authentic, beautiful artwork from India.
