Description

Vishnu, the Preserver among the Trinity in Hindu mythology has innumerable forms. Each form has a name and a story associated with it.

One of these forms is Sri Nivaasa, literally meaning 'the one in whom resides Sri (Goddess of wealth who is also Vishnu's consort)'.

This sculpture is that of Sri Nivaasa. Being the husband of Sri (or Lakshmi), Vishnu is seen in all his royal majesty in this form. Bedecked with crown and ornaments he is also the main deity of the famous Venkateshvara temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

Carved in Granite, Vishnu holds Chakra (discus) and Shankha (conch shell) in his top two hands. One of his lower hands is shown in Varada Hasta (boon giving) pose and the other is shown extended to rest on his thigh.
