Description
This fantastic Buddha statue carved in Mango wood is a great example of Thai carving and colouring techniques.
Buddha here is shown standing, holding his loose robes gracefully. His gaze is downcast with a hint of smile on lips.
Earlobes are elongated and hung as is usual in Buddha statues in general. This feature represents wisdom.
He holds a fruit in his right hand. This fruit represents Nirvana. The casual manner in which he holds it is symbolic of his total possession of the highest goal of life.
The piece is coloured ink-blue with a rubbing / wash based technique. The golden border of Buddha’s robes and golden crown stand out beautifully on a dark blue background.
