Description

Tanjore painting is one of the most beautiful painting styles that originated in Tanjavur, a town in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is quite an old art; dating back to about 16th century AD. That was the time when nobles and elites of Tanjavur favoured and encouraged shastriya (classical) music and dance, Tamil and Telugu literature and art including paintings of deities and other Hindu religious subjects in South Indian temples as well as Hindu scriptures such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas.

South Indian Tanjore paintings stand out from other painting styles for the liberal use of glittering gold foil and semi precious gems overlaid on vividly coloured images of gods, goddesses and other Hindu celestials. The medium and format of Tanjore painting style lends itself very well to depicting the rich, colourful events in the lives of kings, gods, demons, nymphs etc. in Puranic stories.

This South Indian Tanjore painting of Krishna and Rukmini is one such exquisite Tanjore work.

Sri Krishna is seen braiding his wife Rukmini’s hair. The couple is seated on a royal bed flanked by maids attending to them.

This Tanjore painting has many artistic elements to admire. The beautiful golden matrix on the floor, the intricate design of the jewellery set in Krishna and Rukmini’s hair or the bright golden arch on top are all  superb work of art executed by master Tanjore painter.

Overall this Tanjore painting is a fine example of exceptional artistic grace and beauty that these paintings can exude.
