R
aja Ravi Varma is one of the greatest Indian painters of 19th century and a renowned name in the history of Indian art.

He is well recognized for his unique genre of painting, which was a fusion of Indian subjects from the Puranas and Itihasas; with all their rich iconography rendered in European styled paintings. The result was magnificent paintings which are now priceless and much sought after worldwide.

A lot of his original paintings are stored in Laxmi Vilas Palace, Vadodara.

Raja Ravi Varma himself started a press in Maharashtra that printed oleographs of various subjects and scenes from Indian Puranas and Itihasas such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. These oleographs were very popular and were much in demand. These were printed in thousands and continued even after the demise of Raja Ravi Varma.

However the press came under different administrations and while they continued to print these oleographs, they employed under skilled artists to create designs for new oleographs. Still the press did fairly good until it was destroyed in a fire in 1972 in which most of the original lithographic prints of Ravi Varma were lost forever.
