When is Karwa Chauth 2025?

In 2025, Karwa Chauth will take place from Thu, 9 Oct 2025, 10:54 PM – Fri, 10 Oct 2025, 7:38 PM.

Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

Remember, there are many versions of Karwa Chauth. As per the Hindu religious stories, Maa Parvati first observed Karwa Chauth for the long life of Lord Shiva. She observed strict fasting to have him as her husband. But he was not impressed at all. On the advice of Narada Ji, Goddess Parvati kept a Nirjala fast on the 4th day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in Kartik month and worshiped Lord Shiva. It helped her get eternal marital bliss. So, a large number of females observe Karwa Chauth for a long life and good health of their husbands.

Another popular Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha relates it to Veervati, a beautiful and devoted woman with seven brothers. They were very protective and caring of her. She got married and started living with her husband in a far-off village. One year, she observed the Karwa Chauth festival for the well-being and long life of her husband and followed all rituals. But she could not bear her hunger and thirst. She sought help from their brothers.

They came up with a plan. One of their brothers lit a fire in the courtyard, dressed up like her husband, and stood behind the flames. Veervati saw him and broke her fast. Soon after this, her husband fell ill. It devastated Veervati. She sought help from Lord Shiva and requested forgiveness.

He appeared and explained to her the importance of following the Karwa Chauth ritual properly. He also mentioned that breaking the fast before the sighting of the moon led to the decline of her husband’s health. Veervati started her fast honestly. Her husband’s health began to improve after a few days. In the end, he was blessed with a long life, and they lived happily after that.

Karwa Chauth Rituals

Pre-Dawn Meal
The festival starts early in the morning with a pre-dawn meal, prepared by mother-in-laws for their daughter-in-laws. It provides energy to women to sustain fasting throughout the day. Women consume this pious food before sunrise. It is popularly known as Sargi. It nourishes women and serves as a gesture of love from mother-in-laws to daughter-in-laws.

Women prepare a prayer plate, containing the essentials of the festival. Generally, it includes the following-

Clay Pot- It is an essential part of the festival. Women fill it with water. It symbolizes the feminine power of prosperity and fertility.

Oil Lamp- Women lit a small oil lamp to symbolize the presence of divine energy and light.

Rice & Sacred Thread- During the festival, women use rice as an offering. And, they tie a pious red thread around the pot or around their wrists as a blessing for their husband’s long life.
