Early Life of Maharishi Valmiki

Maharishi Valmiki was born as Ratnakar in a Brahmin family. In his early life, he had no discipline or moral alignment. Actually, he was a dacoit, infamous for violence and cruelty. He used to live in a forest. Inspired by the desire to collect more wealth, he used to rob travellers. Claiming that it provides a livelihood to his family, he justified his actions. Unaware of the crimes committed by him, his family used to support him.

One day, Maharishi Valmiki came across the sage Narada, famous for his spiritual insight and wisdom. He questioned Ratnakar about whether his family would share the consequences of his crime. It shocked Valmiki. He realized his mistakes and decided to follow the path of righteousness.

Ratnakar left his past life. He sought help from Narada, who instructed him to chant the name of lord Rama to purify himself. It transformed his life. Over time, he cleansed his past sins and changed his name from Ratnakar to Valmiki.

Maharishi Valmiki wrote the Ramayana, a classic story of the triumph of good over evil. It mentions the life, struggles, and victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. He was the seventh incarnation of lord Vishnu. Valmiki’s role as a writer of the Ramayana helped him earn the title of the “Adi Kavi,” the first poet.

You must keep in mind that Valmiki was a visionary sage who perceived the divine essence in every living being. He gave detailed insights about moral dilemmas, human emotions, and virtues. This is the reason the Ramayana still captivates us even today.

Remember, Maharishi Valmiki wrote the Ramayana in the form of shlokas (verses). Moreover, it is segmented into seven kands (books)- Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yuddha Kanda, and Uttara Kanda. It narrates the birth of Lord Rama, his early life, exile to the forest, the kidnapping of his life-mate Sita by demon King Ravana, and the historical battle leading to her rescue. Remember, all these happenings signify the timeless values such as duty, devotion, righteousness, and victory of good over evil. Valmik portrayed lord Rama as the Maryada Purushottama (ideal human being). So, he is a source of inspiration for all human beings.
