Utpanna Ekadashi Story
During the Dvapara Yuga (two-fold age), there was a mighty demon named Mura. He was very cruel. He won heaven and forced the gods to run away from their celestial home, Amarvati. Having no option, the gods approached Lord Vishnu and asked for his help.
He decided to help the gods. Lord Vishnu, equipped with his divine weapons, mounted Garuda, his divine eagle, and flew to Chandravati, the capital city of Mura. Numerous powerful demons were deployed to guard the city.
But he fought them all for 10,000 years straight and defeated them all. Demon Mura had magical powers. So, he kept on fighting Lord Vishnu. As a result, the deity became tired. So, he decided to take a rest for some time.
He entered Himavati, a beautiful cave in the Himalayas, and slept. Mura thought it was an excellent opportunity to attack Lord Vishnu. He entered the cave to kill the deity. As soon as he lifted his hand to kill the lord, suddenly, Vinshu’s divine body started to radiate light, and a dazzling feminine energy appeared.
She emerged as a beautiful maiden (Known as Ekadashi Devi), filled with divine energy and equipped with celestial weapons. After seeing her, Mura became surprised. But he chose to fight her out of great arrogance. Ekadashi Devi struck Mura, cut his head, and ended his life for good. When lord Vishnu woke up from his slumber, he saw her and the dead body of Mura.
He blessed Ekadashi Devi, acknowledging that she saved his life. As she was born on the eleventh lunar day of the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month. So, she will be known as Ekadashi. By observing the occasion, devotees eliminate their inner impurities and purify their minds.
