Hartalika Teej Story

As stated earlier, Hartalika Teej denotes the never-ending love and affection of Goddess Parvati for Lord Shiva. The word "Hartalika” comes from two different Sanskrit words- Harat (abduction) and Aalika (female friend). As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati (born as Shailputri) was the daughter of King Himavan, ruler of the Himalayas. She was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva and wanted to marry him. Nevertheless, her father, influenced by sage Narada, decided to organize her marriage to Lord Vishnu.

This was against Parvati’s wishes. As she was determined to marry lord Shiva, Parvati confided herself in the house of a close friend, who took her to a dense forest to protect her from an unwanted marriage. In the forest, Parvati created a Shivalinga from her hair and leaves, worshiped it, and performed extreme penance. In this process, she observed fast without food and water for years and faced hardships.

It pleased lord Shiva. So, he appeared before Parvati and accepted her as his life mate. People celebrate this divine union as Hartalika Teej. This festival encourages women to follow Parvati’s determination & pray for the long life of their husbands. On the other hand, unmarried women observe a fast to be blessed with a perfect husband like Lord Shiva.
