A set of old Kumkuma pots from Kerala. Kumkuma is a red powder derived from turmeric. Dried turmeric is ground with slaked lime which turns bright yellow turmeric into deep red. Kumkuma is stocked well in temples and orthodox Hindu households as it is used much in religious ceremonies and other auspicious events. It is particularly offered to Devi (divine mother) and worn by Hindu women in between their hair-parting indicating their marital status. It is also worn as Tilaka on forehead by Hindu men.
This set of pots is old and well worn and made of bronze. A fine item to collect.
