75 Year Old Butter-thief Krishna Wood Statue

Fantastic wooden statue of Butter-thief Krishna in Kerala style wood carving. Baby Krishna is seen kneeling on a butter pot and eating butter out of it. There is a mythical figure underneath Krishna and it is not clear what it represents. The woman at the left is probably a Gopi (cowherd woman).

The statue is evidently quite old and unusual. Butter-thief Krishna is a popular art theme all over India and there are many styles of art, Tanjore Painting in particular, in which master pieces are created based on this theme.

Lord Krishna is regarded as the Supreme Brahman who descended complete with all his attributes and lived among mortals as one of them. Srimad Bhagwad Purana and Harivamsha Puranas are based on stories on the life of Lord Krishna. Krishna ’s childhood pranks are well recorded in Srimad Bhagwad Purana, his sport of stealing butter as a child earned him the name Makkhan-chor (butter-thief).
