Description
An outstanding bronze statue of reclining, four-armed Vishnu as Govindaraja with Sridevi and Bhudevi. It is rare to come across a well-made statue of reclining Vishnu and more so a Chola bronze of Anantashayanam Vishnu created in traditional design, except of course for the antique statues of this form of Vishnu, of which even images are surprisingly hard to find.
We, therefore, set out to create this beautiful statue and after much research on the original style and pose of reclining Vishnu, settled on creating a statue of Govindaraja Swamy, which is the deity of the famous Govindaraja Swamy temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
Vishnu as Govindaraja Swamy is seen reclining on Adisesha or Ananta (also called Anantashayana therefore) – a devotee-servant of Vishnu who serves as his couch in the form of a gigantic snake. Sesha shades Vishnu with his hoods while the five coils in his body serve to become a majestic, comfortable bed.
Vishnu is seen four-handed and reclining on Sesha. He is in yoganidra (conscious sleep) while his two consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi sit by his feet serving him. The four-armed Govindaraja holds Sudarshan chakra (disc called Sudarshana) and shanka (conch) in his upper hands. He rests his head on one of his hands and his other hand extends to rest gracefully on his slightly bent knee while his feet rest on a lotus.
Govindaraja is bedecked in rich jewellery and wears a magnificent kireetam (crown). His navel sprouts a lotus on which Brahma is born (read here to know more about this concept). This is a truly magnificent bronze statue of Govindaraja Vishnu which any buyer would be proud to own.
Special Comments
The hood of Adisesha and the Lotus in the navel of Vishnu are detachable.
Govindaraja, Sri Devi, Bhu Devi and lotus at Vishnu's feet were cast separately and may be detached from Sesha bed.
