Bhumi-Varaha Bronze Sculpture with Shesha and Garuda
A magnificent bronze statue of Vishnu rescuing Bhumi from nether regions in the form of Varaha. This is a unique bronze statue of Vishnu as Varaha (boar) holding Bhumi (earth) in his arms. Vishnu incarnated as boar to save Bhumi from the demon Hiranyaksha who had captured and imprisoned her in the nether worlds. <br> <br>As Varaha, Vishnu slew Hiranyaksha and restored Goddess Bhumi to her own sphere. The story of the Varaha incarnation of Vishnu is mentioned in Vishnu Purana and Bhagvat Purana and others. This bronze sculpture depicts Varaha holding earth after rescuing her. He holds her delicately on his right shoulder, supporting her feet with his left hand. <br> <br>Vishnu is seen as having the face of a fierce boar with a well-formed snout and protruding tusks. He wears a beautiful crown and his ears are adorned with makara kundala (crocodile shaped earrings). He holds Shankha (conch) and Chakra (disc) in his left and right hands respectively. <br> <br>One of his feet is placed on the lotus that Adishesha (celestial serpent that serves as Vishnu ’s couch), who is seen in his deva (god) form, has offered at his feet. Garuda (Vishnu ’s bird mount) is seen on the right, kneeling with hands folded in reverence to Varaha Murti. <br> <br>Goddess Bhumi is seen offering her stuti (prayer) to Varaha, who is seen admiring her with a hint of smile. This beautiful bronze sculpture rests on a solid square pedestal.
