A remarkable wood carved statue of Ranganatha Vishnu brightly colored in South Indian rural style. Ranganatha is a name of Vishnu. It is a combination of the two words <em>Ranga</em> (God) and <em>Natha</em> (master) meaning ‘God the Master ’. Ranganatha is the deity of the famous Sri Ranganathaswami temple in Sri Rangam, a town in South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. <br> <br>This exquisite, brightly coloured wood carving depicts Vishnu or Ranganathaswami reclined on <em>Adisesha</em>, the couch of Vishnu. <br> <br>Vishnu is seen four armed. In his upper hands he holds <em>shankha</em> (conch) and <em>chakra</em> (disc). His forehead rests on one of his two lower hands and the other hand rests on his thigh. Ranganatha is shaded by <em>Seshanaga</em> seen as a five-hooded snake, who is also seen in a divine form bowing to Vishnu with folded hands. <br> <br>Brahma, four-faced, is seen seated on the lotus that sprouts out of Vishnu ’s navel. Vishnu ’s consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi render service unto his feet. Rishis, gods and other celestial beings are seen assembled behind Vishnu offering him their obeisances to Ranganatha, the supreme lord of all. <br> <br>This woodcarving is much like the beautiful idols seen on the exterior of South Indian styled temples.
