Gajendra Moksham: The Story of Lord Vishnu’s Divine Rescue

Gajendra Moksham: The Story of Lord Vishnu’s Divine Rescue
Lord Vishnu is one of the three major gods in Hinduism and defends the universe and protects dharma or justice. Gajendra appears in the eighth Skandha of the Bhagavata Purana as an elephant whom Vishnu rescued from the jaws of a crocodile. The story of Gajendra Moksha is the story of the consequences that befall those who inflict the curse of God’s devotees upon themselves. The story of Gajendra Moksha, or Gajendra Moksham, as told in the Bhagavata Purana, speaks of the importance of prayer, devotion, and Bhakti. This famous incident has a great symbolic significance in Hinduism. In this blog by Cottage9, we will discuss Gajendra Moksham story and how Lord Vishnu rescued him.

What is Gajendra Moksham?

Gajendra Moksham is one of the most profound stories of the Bhagavata Purana. It tells the story of how a crocodile caught the king of elephants, namely Gajendra, and how he struggled for help. He surrendered himself totally to Lord Vishnu for liberation. The elephant is our soul trying to get out, the crocodile is our ego, our attachments, and our karmic baggage. It is a mirror of our own problems.

The Story of Curse & Rebirth

Once there lived a king called Indradyumna. He is a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Sage Agastya cursed him to be reborn as an elephant. But the king ignored this. Later on, he was born as an elephant, namely Gajendra, in a forest of Trikuta. He was the king of all elephants. A sage in the same forest cursed Huhu, who is a Gandharva. He cursed him to become a crocodile because of his bad behavior. Both the elephant and crocodile were punished for their mistakes.

The Struggle for Life & Death

One day, Gajendra, with his herd, visited the lake to relieve their thirst. Huhu, who was cursed and born as a crocodile, suddenly attacked Gajendra and grabbed him by the leg. Gajendra tries to run away, and this battle runs for thousands of years. All his friends and family come together to help him, but nothing works. When they realized no one could help Gajendra, they left him alone, as the crocodile was not letting go. When all attempts failed, Gajendra raised his trunk and prayed to Lord Vishnu in utter submission. Lord Vishnu blesses his followers who follow the path of truth and dharma. Invite the blessing of Lord Vishnu by bringing the handmade Gajendra moksham painting at home from Cottage9.

The Divine Rescue of Gajendra

Lord Vishnu always hears the prayers of his devotees. When Gajendra called him, he immediately reached out to protect Gajendra. He mounted on Garuda his vehicle. With his Sudarshan Chakra, he removed the crocodile’s head from his body. After seeing this, Gajendra bowed down to Lord Vishnu. Then, Lord Vishnu told him that once, he was a great devotee of his and renowned as King Indradyumna. Sage Agastya cursed him because he had disrespected him.
Lord Vishnu makes Indradyumna understand that Kaivalya exists beyond Svarga and Urdhva Loka by having him born as Gajendra because he chose him. When Gajendra completely gave himself over to Lord Vishnu and let go of all ego, he was able to achieve Moksha. Gajendra’s prayer on this event became the Gajendra Stuti. Devotees of Lord Vishnu sing Gajendra Stuti, a well-known prayer. To bring the divine blessing of Lord Vishnu to the home, recite Gajnedra Stuti in front of the Gajendra Moksham mural painting.

The Crocodile
Huhu, whom past karma and ego cursed to be born as a crocodile, represents past karma and ego and entangles us. Regardless of our intelligence and the powers, inner desires, and material entanglement dominate us.

The Water
The water body, which is the lake, signifies that the water seems to be tranquil until any hidden danger beneath the water attacks us and brings us down.

The Surrender
The ego is the enemy of the soul. A wholeheartedly surrendered spirit is admired even by gods. As soon as Gajnedra put up his ego, Lord Vishnu arrived.
