Tale of Yogini Ekadashi
Tale of Yogini Ekadashi
The story of this auspicious ekadashi starts with the king of Alakapuri named Kubera. He was the treasurer of the demigods. Moreover, he was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He had a servant named Hemamali. He was his gardener. It was the duty of Hemamali to bring fresh flowers from Mansarover Lake for Kubera so that he could worship Lord Shiva. One day, being mesmerized by the beauty of Kubera’s wife Swarupavati, he neglected to collect the flowers. He did this to spend time with his wife.
This neglect cost Hemamali, as Kubera started the puja. During the puja, he found there were no flowers to offer Lord Shiva, making Kubera angry. When Kubera found that Hemamali was busy with the company of her wife, this made him angry. In his anger, Kubera cursed Hemamali with leprosy and separation from his beloved wife. Hemamali stayed in pain for many years. Later, he met sage Markandeya. The sage advised Hemamali to keep a fast on Yogini Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu. Hemamali listened to the sage Markandeya's advice and observed a fast. He was cured of leprosy and also reunited with his wife. This whole story was narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira in the Padma Purana.
